"Just A Quickie With..."
by Charles Hutchinson
Roger Brown, front man of Magic, the Doncaster tribute band whose
new concert show, A Kind Of ELO, visits the Grand Opera House, York.
After your long reign as the king of Queen acts, what made you choose the
Electric Light Orchestra for your latest tribute?
"Before we embarked on the Queen tours, our stage show consisted of some ELO
numbers. We liked their music because it was full of complex harmonies which
suited our style. So when it was suggested we expand this repertoire into a
full-blown show we jumped at the chance."
Are ELO under-rated, or the Oasis of the Seventies or just a Brummie poor man's
Beatles?
"ELO, and in particular Jeff Lynne, their prolific song writer and producer, are
vastly under rated. They leave bands like Oasis standing and are definitely not
a poor man's Beatles. They can hold their own with all the greats."
ELO stands for Electric Light Orchestra, but just as there were five of you
paying tribute to the four-man Queen, this time Magic's line-up is a string
section short of an orchestra. How will you go about creating that orchestral
sound?
"Quite simply with the extraordinary talents of Dave Chapman, who has to be seen
to be believed. He's a marvel on the keyboards."
Dave Chapman is the new recruit to your line-up. Who is he, where did you find
him and what will he bring to Magic?
"Dave is a very accomplished keyboard session player who we have known for some
time and when the opportunity came along with this ELO tribute, his name was
first on the list. He's also a big ELO fan."
With your Queen concert performance, you stressed the sound was more important
than the vision, and presumably that will be the case again with ELO?
"As with the Queen show, we place great emphasis on the sound both in quality
and performance. We have spent a great deal of time trying to perfect the
performance so we won't disappoint ELO fans. We will also have a terrific light
show and projection facilities with ELO images projected behind the band."
Will a show such as yours help to bring about a critical reappraisal of ELO?
"An ELO renaissance is long overdue. The quality of the music speaks for itself
and we can only hope that our contribution will hasten the second coming.
Incidentally, Jeff Lynne has released solo albums with the ELO tag which, as you
would expect, are full of that rich ELO sound coupled with superb melodies.
Check them out!"
What is your favourite ELO track and why?
"There are so many so it's a tough question, but if I'm pushed I suppose it's
Twilight [chart place, number 30, 1981]. It just does it for me."
After ELO and Queen, who could be next up for a tribute wave of the Magic wand?
"Isn't that enough! We've tried The Beach Boys but I think there isn't public
interest in them at this time. Perhaps they will see a renaissance, but I don't
know. We will have to wait and see; it might come out of the blue (no ELO pun
intended)."
Magic, A Kind Of ELO, Grand Opera House, York, Sunday (25th) at 7.30pm. Tickets:
£14, £12; ring 0870 606 3595. Magic will return on June 3 on The Celebration
Tour of A Kind Of Queen.
